History of Neos VR
A historical overview of Neos VR's evolution, its Resonite split, and the 2025 sunset of the Neos cloud.
About Neos
Neos VR (often shortened to “Neos”) was a social virtual reality platform and in-world creation environment developed by Solirax. It became known for real-time collaborative world building, a node-based logic system commonly referred to as LogiX, and cloud-backed sharing and persistence. Following internal disputes and a major team split in 2023, much of the community and development momentum shifted to Resonite, a successor platform operated by Yellow Dog Man Studios. Neos VR's official cloud services were discontinued in 2025, which would have resulted in the loss of content not migrated to Resonite, were it not for the preservation efforts of volunteers behind the Neos Archive Project. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Overview
Neos VR positioned itself not only as a destination for social VR, but as a “metaverse engine” where users could build interactive content from inside the running world. Contemporary coverage emphasized real-time collaboration and “in-world editing” as defining traits, an approach sometimes compared to collaborative document editing, but applied to 3D spaces and interactive systems. [5] [6]
The platform supported both VR and desktop play, and was released on Steam in early access in 2018 as a free-to-play application. Over time, Neos VR developed a reputation for technically ambitious creators and experimental content, including user-built tools, games, and interactive worlds. Community events such as creator jams and building competitions were commonly associated with the platform's culture. [1]
Early development
Neos VR emerged from earlier VR experimentation associated with its principal creator (often known publicly as “Frooxius”). A Neos ecosystem whitepaper describes a background of early VR projects and notes involvement in VR accelerators and startup initiatives during the mid-2010s, situating Neos among the earlier wave of platforms attempting persistent, user-created virtual worlds. [7]
Early public demonstrations and press coverage framed Neos as a metaverse crafting and world-building experience, highlighting tools for rapidly creating terrain, structures, and interactive elements from within VR itself. This “build in-place” workflow-creating content while simultaneously inhabiting it would remain a defining aspect of the platform's identity. [8]
Pre-release and alpha period
By 2016, reporting increasingly emphasized multi-user collaboration and synchronized editing. Coverage described creators joining the same environment to build together and see changes propagate quickly to other participants. Accounts from this period also highlighted an emphasis on immediacy-tools for spawning and shaping objects, changing materials, and importing content rapidly. [5]
In 2017, a major milestone was the addition of cloud functionality, enabling users to save worlds and projects to the cloud and browse or access creations made by others. This shift supported the “metaverse” framing by making creation persistent beyond a single session. [9]
Steam release and growth
Neos VR launched publicly on Steam on May 4, 2018. Wikipedia's summary describes it as a free-to-play social VR application and notes a hybrid engine approach involving a custom engine and Unity. During the Steam era, Neos VR became closely associated with creator-led experimentation, including interactive tools and environments built and shared within the platform. [1]
In-world creation and collaboration
Neos VR was widely distinguished by in-world authoring: users could create and edit scenes while inside the running world rather than relying exclusively on external tools. Contemporary descriptions emphasized that multiple users could collaboratively edit the same environment, with changes synchronized across the session. This design encouraged “build sessions” where social interaction and content creation occurred simultaneously. [5]
LogiX and interactive systems
Neos VR featured a node-based logic system known as LogiX, used to create interactive behaviors in worlds and objects. Wikipedia describes LogiX as a node-based programming system. The Neos wiki archive contains extensive node documentation, illustrating how the platform treated logic, data, and scene structure as closely integrated building materials. [1] [11] [12]
Cloud persistence and sharing
Cloud persistence was central to Neos VR's identity as a “metaverse” rather than a single-session sandbox. Reporting during the alpha period described cloud saving and the ability to browse and access other creators' work. In practice, cloud-backed storage enabled users to maintain inventories and share worlds and objects across sessions, capabilities that became significantly impacted by the 2025 cloud shutdown. [9] [4]
Community
Neos VR cultivated a creator-centric culture that often emphasized experimentation, teaching, and collaborative prototyping. Wikipedia notes recurring community activities such as creator jams and maker competitions. Neos Team authored guidance also developed around etiquette and performance considerations, reflecting the technical depth and the impact user-generated content could have on shared sessions. [1] [13]
Controversies and organizational conflict
In later years, Neos VR faced controversy related to cryptocurrency-linked features and broader governance direction. A 2021 episode included a temporary disruption of Steam availability reported in connection with cryptocurrency-related disputes. The Neos wiki archive also documents changes in Steam build functionality related to token/credit systems, describing features being disabled on the primary Steam build to allow continued updates while remaining available through alternative distribution. [14] [15]
By 2023, reporting described a deeper internal dispute between the platform's principal creator and the company's other co-founder, culminating in resignations and a break that made reconciliation unlikely. Sources from 2023 describe this as a major inflection point for the platform and its community. [3]
Split and successor platform
In 2023, a substantial portion of the development team and community attention shifted to Resonite, described in press coverage as a spiritual successor to Neos VR. Road to VR and UploadVR reported that Resonite would enter Steam Early Access in October 2023, developed by Yellow Dog Man Studios and connected to the former Neos VR development leadership. [2] [3]
Post-split, Neos VR and Resonite effectively represented parallel trajectories: Neos VR continued under Solirax stewardship, while Resonite carried forward many of the platform design goals (in-world creation, user-generated worlds and systems) and became a focal point for former Neos VR creators. [16]
Sunsetting of cloud services
On August 20, 2025, Neos VR published an official announcement (“Cloud Services Farewell”) stating that cloud services were being wound down and that online cloud-based features would no longer be available. The announcement indicated the application would remain playable in local, LAN, and virtual LAN configurations, but the loss of cloud services substantially reduced the platform's original metaverse functionality, including cloud persistence and related features. [4]
Wikipedia similarly records the 2025 shutdown of online cloud services and notes subsequent delisting on Steam, reflecting the platform's transition from a cloud-backed social world to a more limited, self-hosted or local-session experience. [1]
Legacy
Neos VR is frequently cited by creators as an example of deeply integrated in-world authoring: a platform where social interaction and technical construction were interwoven. Its emphasis on collaboration, fast iteration, and programmable interactive systems influenced successor efforts and demonstrated that “making things together” could be a primary social activity in VR rather than a separate development phase. [5] [2]
Preservation
Following the discontinuation of Neos VR's cloud services, large portions of publicly accessible user-created content-including worlds, avatars, tools, and interactive systems-faced the risk of permanent loss. In response, members of the Neos VR community organized the Neos Archive Project, a volunteer-led preservation effort dedicated to safeguarding this material before it disappeared.
The project focuses on the archival of publicly available content for historical, educational, and non-commercial purposes. Rather than extending or reviving the original platform, the archive aims to document and preserve Neos VR as it existed, providing future researchers, creators, and community members with insight into the platform's creative and technical legacy. Ownership and rights to archived content remain with the original creators, and the project operates independently of Neos VR's former publisher.
By capturing and organizing these digital artifacts, the Neos Archive Project serves as a record of the collaborative culture that defined Neos VR. This helps ensure that its creative output and community-driven innovation remain accessible beyond the platform's operational lifespan.
