Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the Neos Archive project, its features, and how it came to be.

What is the Neos Archive?

The Neos Archive is a volunteer-led, community-driven initiative dedicated to preserving publicly available content from the Neos VR platform after its sunset. It exists solely for archival, educational, and historical purposes. Access to the archive is provided free of charge.

Who runs the Neos Archive?

The project is operated entirely by volunteers from the Neos VR community. It is not affiliated with, or supported by Yellow Dog Man Studios or Solirax LTD. Feel free to join our Discord server to connect with the volunteers who made this project possible.

Has the Neos client or archived content been modified?

No. The Neos VR binaries and archived content are preserved as-is. The Neos Archive setup contains a new game launcher and a Mod necessary to direct the client to the Neos Archive cloud.

What are the system requirements to access the Neos Archive?

The Neos Archive supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, under the same requirements as the Neos VR client (below). The Linux client is currently not distributed.

What are the technical differences between the Neos Archive and Neos?

As the Neos Archive was primarily designed to provide core functionality, there are a few signficant differences that should be highlighted.

No User Accounts - The Neos Archive client is designed to run in a logged-out state. As a result, systems and worlds that rely on a User ID may not function correctly. This can impact user-specific features, permissions, and logic within worlds. A potential solution is being explored, but for now, some content may not operate as originally intended.

Lack of Asset Variants - The original Neos cloud maintained a large cache of asset variants, which are not included in the archive. Asset variants help reduce VRAM usage and improve rendering performance. While the Neos client can still load most assets directly, this may result in increased VRAM consumption and reduced performance. In some cases, worlds may perform poorly or crash on systems with limited VRAM.

Headless Client Support - Neos supporters previously had access to a server-side client known as the Neos Headless Client. Due to the absence of multiplayer support and the fact that the Headless Client was distributed exclusively to paid Neos supporters, the Neos Archive does not provide access to the Headless Client.

External services - Following the sunset of Neos, many APIs and external services have changed or gone offline, resulting in the loss of certain features. Services such as YouTube video playback, Twitch chat and stream playback, and Discord CDN links may no longer function correctly. Additionally, community-hosted services, including content generators, tools, and inventory search systems, are likely no longer operational.

Who owns the content in the archive?

All rights remain with the original creators. The archive does not claim ownership and does not permit commercial reuse. Please contact the original content creators for any reuse or licensing questions.

How do I report innappropriate content found in the archive?

We've put a lot of care into removing private or adult content from the archive, but with more than 100,000 records, it's possible something slipped through. If you spot anything concerning, please join our Discord and let us know in the #removal-requests channel.

Can I request my content be removed from the archive?

Yes. Creators may request removal of their content at any time. While preservation is encouraged for historical reasons, all removal requests from the original owner are respected. To initiate a removal request, join our Discord and open a request in the #removal-requests channel.

Can I save new content, or upload content to the archive?

No. The archive is read-only and contains only content that was shared publicly before the original Neos cloud backend went offline.

Can I register an account, or log in to my Neos account?

No. As the archive is a read-only copy of publicly available content from Neos, there does not exist a way to register or log into an account.

Does the Neos Archive support multiplayer sessions?

No. Adding multiplayer support would require the need to monitor and moderate the platform to ensure the safety of those who are accessing the archive. For this reason, the archive is available in single-player mode only.

Is this project open source?

The Neos Archive Launcher and Neos Archive Mod, included in the Neos Archive Installer, are open source and available in our GitHub repository. The server software used to host the Neos Archive is proprietary and is not distributed.
